For your first DEXA scan a referral needs to be made by your general practitioner or attending hospital doctor to appointments@ dexalimerick.ie. Subsequent scans may be booked by the consultant in the osteoporosis service depending on perceived risk from previous scans.
Once a referral is received by DEXA Limerick you will receive an appointment together with a questionnaire sent to you with a stamped addressed envelope seeking information on your osteoporosis risk profile, medicines, insurance details etc. This should be returned immediately. This questionaire can also be completed on line and submitted below. You should attend at the appointed time and location. You will be asked to wear loose fitting clothes and for women where there is a possibility of pregnancy you will be asked to inform the specialist nurse about this.
The scan results are reviewed by the consultant in charge of the DEXA unit and a report is sent to your original referring doctor.
Private scans are covered by VHI and LAYA. Some other insurance companies will reimburse the cost of the scan on production of a payment receipt at the end of your renewal period.
